The Quadratic Function (Graphs of Parabolas & Completing the Square)

Lesson:

220 - 1 Hour 24 Minutes

Summary:This lesson studies the quadratic function. It begins with drawing graphs of parabolas and moves on to the main focus, completing the square.

After this lesson, you will be able to:

  • work with a quadratic function of the form y = ax2 + bx + c where a is not equal to 0 to draw parabolas.
  • graph y = ax2 with different values for a.
  • graph y = ax2 + c with different values for c.
  • complete the square on the form y = ax2 + bx + c
  • to change to the completed square form y = a(x - p)2 + q in order to find:
         - the vertex
         - the equation of the axis of symmetry
         - the minimum or maximum value of the function
         - the range of the function
  • understand parabolas in detail and why they:
  •      - open up or down
         - open left or right
         - expand or compress
  • solve minimum and maximum word problems.
